Our journey so far...

We’re an Aussie family of 3, with an insatiable thirst for adventure.

Our first camping trip was back in early 2017 and we ventured down to Yamba with our new tinny, and we had the best time. I remember so clearly the joy in Lennox’s eye’s when he caught his first fish, a 42cm Mangrove Jack in the Clarence River. I still have the video on my phone and watch it from time to time. It was a special day.

A few months later, we packed up the swags and headed up to Agnes Water. Camped in the beachfront caravan park, the sun was shining, the winds were good and there was a 2-3 foot swell rolling through and only a few people paddling out. The boys were pumped! I explored the stunning coastline and barely saw another soul. We discovered several remote beaches and 4wd tracks. We lived on fresh local seafood and we slept under the stars. We were in our element.

After 2 successful camping missions, it was evident that this lifestyle was for us.

We then attended our first Camping Show in Brisbane, what an eye opener! We settled on a MDC Camper Trailer. We explored everywhere from Forster to Byron, and out west to Tamworth. We had our set-up and pack-down times down to a fine art. Or so we thought.

One trip we arrived in to Scott’s Head, and it was pouring with rain. We had a minimum 1 hour set-up ahead of us. It was not fun. A caravan was reversing in to the site next to us. That family were fully set-up in under 10 minutes. We were drenched in rain, and envy.

Benn was due for his long service leave in early 2020, and we were thinking of doing a 3 month camping trip. I was also in the process of selling my business. We were ready for change.

Somehow we had stumbled across a few travelling families on Instagram and Youtube, and we became obsessed with learning more about this lifestyle. Our dream lifestyle. We decided that this path was for us, we sold the MDC, ordered a Lotus Trooper and the plans were underway for our lap of Oz.

We were literally about 2 months from leaving the Gold Coast and heading north, and then....Covid hit! The uncertainty was all a bit too much, so we pushed the plans back 12 months, hoping life would be back to normal then. Covid was still here, but it seemed a lot less restrictive, so we finally hit the road in early 2021. We drove to Agnes Water.

Life on the road for us had begun. It was finally happening! The emotions, the lack of routine, the art of relaxing, this new sense of complete freedom. It was a lot to process and get used to.

With all of our planning, one thing we didn’t factor in was how Lennox would cope, being pulled away from his mates, his sport, his routine, with no end date in site. His world as he knew it had been turned upside down. Some days were really tough for our boy.

But then, after couple of months, and cruising around far north QLD, we found our groove. We had really learnt a lot about ourselves, each other and our emotional needs, our triggers and the things we all require to fill our cups. We got to know each other on a much deeper level, and it just got better and better.

We continued on our travels through the NT and northern WA. The Top End literally blew our minds. It was wild, remote, sacred and captivating. We cannot wait to get back there again. It holds a special place in our hearts.

We spent a good 12 months cruising up and down the West Coast, up north in Winter, down south in Summer. We loved the diversity of the state, and the coastline, oh my! There ain’t nothing like it. Especially around the Exmouth region. For us, this place is our kinda paradise.

After almost 2 years on the road, and our WA Wedding, we slowly made our way back across the bottom of Oz and up the east coast, back to Burleigh. We were all looking forward to getting back, moving in to a house and getting a dog.

Shortly after we arrived back on the Gold Coast, we sold our Landcruiser and Lotus Caravan. Bittersweet, but we were ready for the next chapter, and needed the money!

We’ve been back in Burleigh for almost a year now, and it’s been an interesting transition back in to a ‘normal’ life. Burleigh has changed so much while we were away. But we’ve changed so much too.

Whilst we are no longer full-time travelling, we are always planning our next adventure. Even if it’s a weekend away or a day out on the boat. We live and breathe the camping and fishing lifestyle, and we always will.

Thanks so much for your support. Hannah, Benn + Lennox
